Sankofa: Go Back & Fetch It

The sankofa bird is one of the most popular and distinct adinkra symbols. It has many variations and represents taking from the past and building onto the future. It is commonly seen in ironwork and designs throughout the world where African have lived.

During slavery in the United States, Africans would use the symbol in gates and only artwork as a reminder to themselves and future generations to never forget their past.
